Historic Collections

Founding Forward is the steward of a thorough and informational historic collection, primarily based in the American Civil War. The collection is multi-dimensional, including objects, art, archives, books, manuscripts, and more. It has been used for genealogical and other historical research, including a wide range of publications from history texts to family papers. In addition, Founding Forward is also an active lending institution.

Historical stewardship

Given its advanced stewardship practices, Founding Forward not only cares for its own collection and that of its institutional partner, The Union League of Philadelphia, two other long-time Civil War-based historically Philadelphia organizations have also entrusted their collections care to Founding Forward – The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) and The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia (CWMP).

The collections under the care of Founding Forward include many different types of items divided into four categories: published materials, unpublished materials, objects, and works of art.

Published materials

Published materials includes, but are not limited to, books, periodicals, and pamphlets relevant to the Union League, its activities, its members, its employees, or relevant to the American Civil War. These items are referred to as the Library Special Collection.

Unpublished materials

The unpublished materials refer to the original two-dimensional items of historical significance, including but not limited to manuscripts, archives, photographs, and ephemera. The archives and manuscripts collections contain archival records of various organizations, as well as diaries, letters, first-hand accounts, photographs, maps, scrapbooks, and many more unpublished materials.

Objects

Objects refers to the original three-dimensional items of historical significance relevant to the League, its activities, its members, its employees, or relevant to the American Civil War.

Art collection

The art collection includes many important paintings, bronzes and other works related to the Civil War and other periods of American history. Most of these paintings are displayed around the Union League properties, but are under the care and stewardship of Founding Forward.

Much of the collections are stored in a state-of-the-art, high-density collections storage vault that contains some of the great historical pieces of the Union League, MOLLUS, and the CWMP. The vault houses approximately 3,000 linear feet and 1,000 cubic feet of material.

The archival, object, and art collections are available to search in Founding Forward’s online catalog PastPerfect. These collections are a great asset for research. Publications

History Books

The Union League has published its own histories since the late nineteenth century, a tradition that Founding Forward, and its predecessor charities, continued in more recent years.

Art catalogs

After the Civil War, League members turned their attention to the arts. As patrons of the arts, League members were eager to decorate the League House with paintings and sculptures. Those members and the Union League Art Association – established in 1882 by members to buy art for the League – worked to build the League’s art collection.

With this interest in the fine arts, the League hosted several art exhibitions in 1870, 1871, and 1873 and for each, published a catalog of the pieces on display. The Union League published the first catalog of its own art collection in 1908, followed by updated versions in 1940 and 1978. Founding Forward has continued this work of caring for, curating, and documenting the art collection in printed catalogs with its most recent catalog from 2005.

Internships and volunteer opportunities

There are several opportunities for college-level undergraduate or graduate student internships and/or volunteer programs. Interested individuals can do so as part of an internship for course credit or for volunteer experience.
For students looking for work within the historic collections, projects could be focused on the art, archival, library, or manuscript collections of the Union League and the other collections under the care of Founding Forward. The timeline for this area of project could be more flexible throughout the year. Projects could include data entry, collections inventory, transcription work, cataloging, and other tasks.
Students looking to work within the historic collections will learn various skills like primary source transcription and the basics of cataloging in the PastPerfect archival software.

For those interested in history, civil war studies, and public history, please contact archives@wordpressmu-1261609-6135656.cloudwaysapps.com to learn more about these opportunities.
